Getting Organized One Month at a Time

Dear Pam and Peggy,

Thank you for writing The Sidetracked Sister’s Happiness File.  I came from an abusive home, my mother was a tyrant and my dad was a workaholic so he was gone most of the time.  It is no wonder, she is a very mean person.  Several years ago, I had to make a decision to not communicate with her, because she would drag me down every time we’d get together or even talk on the phone.  I feel guilty, because she is my mother, but I learned I have to take care of myself first.

I am the oldest of four, my siblings are all boys.  I have one brother who is hopelessly on drugs and the other 2 struggle with depression.  Since I never had good role models for having a happy life, as a grownup I have always been searching.  I recently got your audio book and have been listening for a half hour every day.  It is true the contents of my home hold my story and I am gradually getting organized and getting it to reflect happiness one month at a time.

I am blessed with a happy hubby who adores me and has supported my challenge of changing my thinking for 18 years.  Don’t get me wrong, because I don’t regret this, but we didn’t have children because I was too afraid I wouldn’t be a good mother!  I wish I’d read your book 18 years ago!

Pam here: My heart goes out to every child who had lousy parents.  That is one experience I can’t relate to, but I do know we can learn to love ourselves and we get a second chance to supply what we missed.  The Happiness File breaks a year down into the 12 months and focuses on a theme for each month.  June’s theme is Kids and Parents and that chapter is filled with ways to up your happiness quotient with your family.  It truly is a life-changing book.
