My Child Thrives on Routines

FlyLady Ultimate TimerDear FlyLady,

I just started FLYing a few weeks ago, and it’s really helped me loosen up about my home. I’ve always been an all-or-nothing type, so learning to do what I can and not worry about the rest has been liberating!! But that’s not why I’m writing to you today.

My 7-year-old son has severe ADHD. Mornings and afternoons are a battle to get anything accomplished. Breakfast and homework can turn into an all out war! This week I decided to include him in on some of my new routines, such as making the bed every morning and getting dressed to his shoes before breakfast. Those 2 things made our mornings so much easier this week that I decided to ask him to work on his room for 15 minutes while I did my weekly zone. I cannot remember the last time his room was that clean (without me going behind him), and it was so EASY!

I explained what we were doing, set the timer, and never once had to redirect him back to his task! He just did it! I told him there was a mission for today as well, and he volunteered to do the extra work- cleaning out his socks. I’m just blown away at how well it worked for him and can’t wait to see just how much easier this is going to make BOTH of our days!

Thank you!

FlyLady here: Our Children love timers and routines. Just don’t pile on! Make it fun and they will do it. Put on some fun music and use that as a timer.
