A Reminder too Close to Home

Dear FlyLady,

The front of our local paper showed a burned house in which two people died of smoke inhalation. It was a dryer fire, and the people were relatives of someone I know.

Why did it take a tragedy close to home to make me get out my dryer cleaning kit and finally use it? I’ve had it for a long time and haven’t followed through. My husband helped with the outside part and he decided to replace the vent. We ended up with at least a gallon of packed lint in the shop vac.

I always empty the lint trap, and I often reach down under it to pull out extra buildup, but that’s clearly not enough of a reach to clean it out. And, yes, my three boys made fire-started kits with dryer lint back when they were Boy Scouts.

I added dryer cleanings to my FlyLady calendar so this does not get away from me again. And I’m loaning my kit to friends and family in between times.

Thanks for keeping on us to get this done. I was so glad to have the tools I needed when I was finally shocked into action.

Flybaby K
