November Habit #2 Menu Planning Keeps Me on Budget

Dear FlyLady,

I have been a single mom of a DS (now 18) and DD (now 15) for 11 years and they have always given input for menus and basic cooking. Two years ago when I acquired a DB (then finance now husband) we talked about cooking chores. Depending on the kids class schedule they cook one to two nights per week, DH cooks two and I cook two. On Saturday morning menus are due to me and grocery lists as well.

Both have graduated from cooking box meals to looking through cookbooks and online sites to find new recipes and figuring out what’s on hand and what we need to buy. They also understand when I say the ingredients are outside the budget.

They remember things I have made in the past and forgotten about until they ask. Helps teach planning, budgeting, and nutrition.

Welcome to November – the Menu Planning month. All month long, we are going to learn how to plan our menus to save money and feed our families healthy. This will be a fun habit to learn and to practice.

Are you tired of making the same recipes? Leanne Ely, aka The Dinner Diva, is FlyLady’s very good friend and a certified nutritionist. She has developed several cookbooks full of healthy dinners for families. Check out her original cookbook, Saving Dinner. You can buy a copy of Saving Dinner from The FlyShop.
