Dear Friends,

Many years ago my grandmother told me that any food you throw into the trash can is just like tossing dollar bills into the garbage. She was a very wise women. She taught me about a shiny sink too. It was the last thing she did after cleaning up her kitchen from supper.

She went through the great depression and World War II. This woman knew how to save money. One of my first memories is playing in the garden and sitting on the carport breaking green beans. She taught me how to sew and put up the best frozen corn in the world.

As I think back to my childhood Granny Deannie gave me wings. She was an amazing teacher because she practiced what she preached. One day I will write a book about all of the things she shared with my sister Paddi and me.

My Granny never cooked from a box. She cooked from scratch. I will never forget her drop biscuits. They were stirred up in a green mixing bowl that she had redeemed with stamps at the gas station. Then she would drop them onto her cast iron griddle and stick them into the oven to bake until they were golden brown and crunchy on top. She served them with little pieces of ham from a pig they had raised. Oh my, now this is making me cry purple puddles.

This week I want you to commit to making something from scratch. We don’t need mixes to make pancakes, biscuits, muffins, cookies, cakes, or mac and cheese. Recipes for all of these are on the internet. We see them every day come on our Facebook News feed. Do a Google search for “Basic Anything Recipe” and you will find what you are looking for.
