Replay from October 18th, 2007.  Marla is joined by Leanne and they talk about the magic of routines.  Just doing the day-to-day routines — morning, afternoon, and evening — is the answer to one caller who is just too tired after a long day of work, or another caller who suffers from too much kid clutter and too much kitchen spice clutter, and still another caller who has finally learned to “just do it!”  Just do the routines and don’t get caught up in the why-it-is-important trap.  The highlight of this show is a call that gets Marla and Leanne talking about the need to take care of oneself first.  This is a MUST listen for anyone who needs sleep and a bit of down time to rest the body and rejuvenate the soul.  You’ll find other hints on cleaning a tub with mold stains, taking care of photo clutter, getting on top of paper clutter, and even a bit of cooking advice.

Marla is having “a day at the beach”… replay San Angelo Texas princess show. Spinning plates – caring for yourself. On putting things away (Laura Ingalls Wilder) because you won’t get back to it as soon as you think.
Project mode. Marla’s story of becoming a county commissioner, needing to start routines. Emergency preparedness. Hoarding – Suze Orman’s book, Courage to be Rich. Each person has space to store stuff. Shine your sink first. Houseguests respecting your rules.  Feng shui = multiples of 9, so that’s where the 27-fling boogie got started. Teaching kids to dust.

Trish Suhr (the “Yard Sale Diva” from the TV show Clean House) is Marla’s special guest. These two Southern belles make for lots of laughs as they talk about spoiled hand lotions, refrigerator magnets, and label makers. The ladies are a must listen for just plain fun and lots of terrific ideas! Callers include one who needs help to stop beating up on herself and help with taking baby steps back to a livable home, another who is a writer who can’t write because her desk is a huge Hot Spot about to burst into a raging forest fire, and yet another who needs to learn when enough is enough to avoid burning out. Marla gets right to the point for each one.

Calls from Australia, Israel, and England, only prove that our troubles are the same everywhere.  Marla helps these callers understand the how and why we all need to learn to deal with someone else’s clutter and someone else’s messes.  (Ahem, “someone else” really means “husband.”)   Married Fly Babies may want to give this show a listen.  Then a caller from the mid-west has Marla explaining the difference, and similarities, between stay-at-home fly babies and those who work away from home.   After a re-airing of Marla and Trish Suhr from earlier in the week — well worth a second listen — Jackie checks in and the talk turns to movies and recipes.  Marla’s wilted mustard greens sounds delish!

Marla is joined today by Patty (Marla’s sister) for some reminiscing and some good, sisterly chit-chat.  They talk about not letting the small stuff, like a spilled cup of coffee, get us down; about developing a community of people who will help when we face issues new to us; and about the benefits of decluttering.  Marla and Patty spend some quality time with one caller who has just about everything working against her including an overbearing, born organized mother-in-law who lives next door, four children, a hubby who doesn’t help with the house, and a history of being raised in a home where her own mother had hoarding issues and where housework was a punishment.  As Marla explains the first baby steps and some other essential concepts of the FlyLady system, we all get a good introduction to the basics and some encouragement that we, too, can benefit from the change in our attitudes toward our homes and our responsibilities.

This two-hankie show is focused on learning to love yourself. Nikki gets it all started by sharing with us the origin of her Princess Diary and her meditative prayer which begins,”Please help me not spend one minute of my life asking, ‘Why?’ …” After a cameo appearance from Monica, Marla returns to the concept of loving yourself and how it relates to taking care of yourself. One caller needs both a crisis cleaning and also help with blending her daily routines with all the responsibilities of farm life. Another caller is overwhelmed with living in extremely tight quarters while their home is being remodeled. And the last caller, a person who is always helpful to others, just can’t seem to dip her big toe in the lake of giving she showers on others. Marla has uplifting words of encouragement and words of practical help for each.

Marla and Nikki talk about getting out of the world of blah-blah-blah and into the world of rah-rah-rah.  They talk about ways to work through those times when things are getting us down.   One caller who was in a pretty bad place in her life when she first found FlyLady, tells about learning to FLY (Finally Loving Herself).   Marla tells the story of her own journey through depression and how she got through it.  Another caller tells of her stress and how routines and the FlyLady chat room helped her get on track.   One of Marla’s FlyGuys calls in with a question about sharing the responsibilities of maintaining his space.  A Wyoming caller wants to know if Marla knows about the book,  Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard, by Chip Heath and Dan Heath.   (Fly Babies might want to check this one out.)  Then the caller and Marla chat about all kinds of things from raising children to learning how to play.   A caller from Belgium calls just to say “Thank you,” to Marla and the crew.
