Romantic Valentine Ideas

  1. Well, this is sort of a creative all day date for Valentine's Day or any other day your hubby is home. I did this one last year for Valentine's Day. Since Valentine's is on a Monday this year, you can line this up for the weekend. Start in the morning sometime with breakfast in bed. Then, the idea is to set a timer throughout the whole day for every hour on the hour. When it beeps, give your hubby a special surprise. It can be anything--I did things like a card, chocolate of course, little small inexpensive gifts, a book, a video from Blockbuster(or you can do movie tickets). I even did little creative activities like a back rub, and I made a pitcher of red colored water and made him go out in the snow(we're in Canada) and write our initials in a big heart in the snow. It took up our entire front yard!! It was a great day! It took him a while to figure out why I kept setting the timer every hour, but once he figured it out, he looked forward to every beep with great anticipation.

  2. I'm planning an overnight get-away for my husband and I. We have 5 kids, and haven't been alone overnight in 13 years! This is an operation on the scale of the Normandy Invasion. Try farming out 5 kids overnight sometime to see what I mean!
I'm planning on taking us to a bed and breakfast, not too far away, but far enough for an escape! A fancy dinner, some antique shopping (try that with kids!), and a leisurely morning alone - heaven! We've been married 18 years next week, on Valentine's Day. We rarely celebrate our anniversary on the actual day, but we always celebrate both Valentine's day and our anniversary.

  3. After a wonderful Italian dinner, we have tickets to see 'Larry the Cable Guy'.
    ROMANTIC??????????????
    Well, was his idea.;)

  4. My husband and I are going to renew our vows . We were 1 of the 99 couples chosen in a contest i entered. It is taken place Feb.12, then I think we might go out for lunch to celebrate because march 24th will be our 10 year anni. Don't know what else we will do.

  5. Hi!
I am making my DH a scrapbook called "What I Love About You"!

  6. I am making a nice quiet, relaxed dinner at home for our romantic evening. We will watch some rented movies too.

  7. My DH and I normally don't do much for Valentine's Day. We just do something small to show the other that we love them. We generally just get each other cards. My DH does get me roses normally too. So, this year I was going to get up early and surprise my DH with homemade blueberry muffins. I normally just make them the night before a vacation so we can just warm them up and eat before we leave. Or put them in a bag if we end up being in a rush. He tells me they are the best part about our vacations. So, I was thinking I could treat him to a small Valentine's Day vacation at home with blueberry muffins.

  8. Hey y'all!
The in-laws are keeping the kids overnight and we are getting massages at the house! I don't even have to crisis clean because the house is in good shape! Even the Master Bathtub...if you know what I mean (you know to get the oil off!) I even know where the candles are!

Thanks to you, I can finally love myself and my DH!
    Happy Valentines Day!

  9. We are going to a special place we both like, overnight at our favorite hotel, and we have a picnic on the bed in the hotel with wine cheese and our favorite snacks, then the next day is just the 2 of us.

  10. Several years ago (after kids left home, before Dad came), I came home from work on Valentine's Day to find a wonderful surprise . . .
DH had put a tension rod with a lace curtain up across our entry way. When he heard the door open, he came to greet me at the door with a towel over his arm, and parted the lace curtain for me.
He had soft music playing on the stereo. He had candles on the table. He had taken the leaf out of the table to reduce it's size to an intimate table for two he had prepared one of my favorite dinners completely by himself. He had set the table with our best china and silver. He had chilled some non-alcoholic bubbly for us.
He waited on me hand and foot that night. He refused to let me help clean up. He made sure that I felt completely cherished.

    The best Valentine's Day EVER!

  11. What I did for my hubby....
WE all ready had our Valentine's Day as I knew that we wouldn't be able to for the actual day. I rented us a hotel room where we had a jacuzzi suite. I checked in before him and had him meet me there at 5:30. I left a note for him at the desk to "find me". All around the hotel I had given different employees "clues" about where I was hiding. The last clue was a key to our room. And then in the room was a bottle of champaign, and his suit asking him to join me in the hot tub down in the water park.
We did come and find me, and we had a great time. We swam, and then went and changed and went to a nice dinner. We enjoyed our jacuzzi room, and we slept late! It was a great time!
The kids were with my parents so it was a very stress free and romantic evening! I am sure I will try something like it again!

  12. I thought I'd set up a card table in front of the fireplace and have a candlelit dinner!
Don't know if I can afford/get it before Monday, but I also thought satin sheets would be nice!! (red of course)!

  13. i LOVE valentines day!! my BF loves krispy kremes and pizza so i am going to incorporate this. we are both vegetarians so we always go to our fave vegetarian restaurant on special occasions, BUT for lunch i'll have delivered to his office a pizza that says "i heart u". the "i" will be in olives, the heart will be in tomatoes, and the "u" in mushrooms. it will be from his fave pizza place (a small local place here) then after dinner when we get home i'll give him his 1 dozen krispy cremes and a red krispy creme t-shirt (red for valentines day and he works in a caual office and wears t-shirts everyday.) and, of course a mushy card to let him know how much i adore him and all he does for me every day. :-) he's not a materialistic person at all so this will be perfect.

  14. well John and I met online--by accident--he is in california and I am in Virginia, yes very long distance... I am flying there next week to fix a special dinner and sing to him. I am a musician and well so is he---we are older -so we need more romance !!!I will have candles lit-- after dinner and watching a DVD of a Love story movie I have bought--I will use favorite oil and give him a massage.......happy Valentines day ! Hey I think every day should be sweetheart day !!!

    Love you all--- N

  15. My sweet Hunny just wants more of me! It seems like with kids, work, cleaning, shopping his needs get pushed to the bottom of the to do list. I found a box of Red Rose petals at wally world for under $2.00 and I picked up some little red tea candles. I think ya know where this is headed lol

loving myself and my husband too!!

  16. We have a local babershop group, they bring a box of chocolates, a card, a flower, and sing two love songs and take a photo. They will come to the restaurant where we will be dining.

  17. My plan is to either fill our camper with candles, get Chinese Take Out for dinner, and invite DH in for a quiet dinner for 2, and some romance, or fill the bedroom at home with candles and surround the whirlpool with them, fill the whirlpool with hot, bubbly water, take a nice whirlpool bath together, then…. A little romantic time.

  18. With DH in the military and half way across the country, gifts are harder too send than letters. I wrote a letter telling him the reasons that I love him and how much he means to me. This is something he can pull out whenever he feels lonely or down, and it was a blessing to me to be able to realize how much our relationship has grown over the years.

  19. This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but I just had to share it!
A few weeks ago, DH and I went to see National Treasure at the theater. In it they travel constantly doing a scavanger hunt type thing, following the clues till they find the treasure.
DH woke me up the other day with a "clue". I was led on a scavenger hunt that lasted for hours! (It was really hard!) When I finally came upon my treasure, it was a certificate to go eat anywhere I wanted with out DH complaning! So for valentines day we are going to Red Lobster!
The next day, I did the same for him, for his prize though I printed out a page that had several pictures of things he would like on one side (such as the Star Wars triligy on DVD, pics of his favorite restaurants, etc) and I folded it in half long ways and cut slits in the one half to make "doors". I told him to pick a door and what ever was behind it was his treasure. He won the Star Wars dvds...

  20. This year I plan on making a special valentine’s day lunch for my DH. He is able to come home for lunch most days so I will be creating a delectable feast, dessert included. I haven’t decided what yet. Most likely they will be his favorites. Best of all, I will serve it on a blanket in the family room in front of the fireplace. I’ve done this for him before and he loved it!

  21. Maybe not too romantic, but we are going to lunch at a local culinary school. It is a fancy 5 course meal, which is quite expensive, but it is cheaper at lunch than at dinner, and we don't have to find a sitter on one of the busiest nights for sitters.

  22. Well my DH (of whom I am so proud of) is building us a new home...all by himself on nights and weekends....SO, in the mean time, we are living with his parents...and let's face it, there is just NOTHING romantic about living with in-laws! However, he is almost finished with the house and in a few short weeks we will be ready to move in. I was really looking forward to being moved in by Valentine's Day...because I LOVE Valentine's and that would mean my DH and I would be living all alone again - what a blessed thought! ;) I had also bought really nice Valentine's deorations etc. to put in our new home...so I was disappointed when I learned our move in date had been delayed.....but then I got a great idea and decided to make the best of our current living conditions! There is heat and one electrical outlet that works for extension cords in our house right now....so I am going to bring over an air matress & a few blankets/pillows, a little TV w/ movies & and a microwave w/ popcorn...maybe some fancy drinking glasses as well as my Valentine's decorations which include roses, rose petals and candles too and set up camp right there in our "bed-room-to-be" and spend the night w/ my DH! It will be a fun surprise for him and then we can both get up and drink Hot Chocolate and work on the house Sat. morning together! I got to thinking that this opportunity will never come again and I'll never be able to say that we spent Valentines Day in our house that wasn't even finished yet....plywood floors etc...no running water, no lights etc etc.... I can guarentee that not many of you will be copying my romantic idea! How unique and what a wonderful memory w/ my DH! Now if that isn't romance, I don't know what is! ;) Now I'm kinda glad that we're not moved in yet....so we can spend Valentine's Day like this! He'll love it!

Flying so high in love in Iowa!

  23. I am making an "I love you jar". I've cut out hearts using red and pink construction paper. Then writing all the reasons I love him on each heart and putting them in the jar along with a few chocolate hearts. I've decorated the outside of the jar with heart stickers and pretty red ribbon. I think this gift would go for a guy or girl. Everyone wants to hear all the reasons they are loved!!!

  24. Last year I got my wonderful Dh a gift card for a local gas station that he frequents to buy drinks. He goes daily so I knew it would be something he would love and appreciate and wouldn't be in my way. Now he's still using the card. He refills it monthly so he doesn't have to pay a dollar for a new one. This year finances are a bit tight so I'm making him a nice italian dinner with homemade chocate cake. I bought him a little box of chocolates and a note pad to write down his ideas (less than 2 dollars for both). We're going to put our DD to bed early and see what happens. I'm also going to make an extra special effort to be sweet to my sweetie.

  25. Hi Fly people.
We our going to a valentines dinner at the church. And they are offering FREE babysitting. What restaraunt in town is babysitting for free. We have a chef in the congregation. Yipee. Can't totally afford it but we'll manage. We haven't be "alone" for dinner in about a year.

    Flying in Ont.

  26. Well, it's not so romantic, but my husband and I promised each other we'd take a long walk together, since it would be "heart-healthy" and easy on the pocketbook too.

  27. I'm going to give my husband 12 cards. One to be opened on the 14th of each month. Each will have a different gift - favorite dinner, back massage, etc. I call it a Year of Valentine's. I did this for him a few years after we were married & he has always said that that was the BEST Valentine's he ever got. I think he still has the cards somewhere.

  28. I'm planning on leaving love notes for a scavenger hunt. I bought a heart shaped pillow which I plan to put a card w/ little love coupons in it, and a chocolate rose--all attached to helium balloons filled w/ candy hearts, kisses and more love notes. For that night I am planning a romantic dinner for two.

  29. This isn't especially romantic, but it is a tradition in our house. 12 years ago, my new husband and I, along with my new 4 year old step-son found a pizza place that serves heart shaped pizza's for Valentine's Day. Since we were newlyweds, we didn't want to get a sitter and have my new step-son feeling left out. So we found a place that everyone enjoys. We haven't missed heart shaped pizza once in the past twelve years and now bring along our 8 year old daughter and 4 year old son. It's made for a wonderful tradition that everyone looks forward to!

  30. A red bow tied around the outside knob of our home, where my husband enters... the ribbon woven throughout the house eventually leading to the bubble bath where it's tied around my ankle sticking out of the tub. Ok, well I would do this if I didn't have 3 toddlers, or maybe that's how I got 3 toddlers! ; )

  31. I'm getting my husband a director's cut on DVD of the movie we saw on our first date. I'm also making him some brownies in a heart shaped pan and leaving love notes all over his desk.

  32. I plan to mail an invitation to him at his work, to arrive on Valentine's Day, for a fine dining experience.
Then, I'll be using Leanne's Ma Maison menu for Valentine's Day dinner...complete with soft music and candelight. He'll pull into the garage and find a red paper chain (like we used to make for Christmas trees when we were all in kindergarten) that will lead from where he parks the car, up the front steps and into the front door, down the hall and into the dining room!
From there he will be shown to and seated at Chez Bean's finest table (ok, so there's only one....but it's the best one!) and he will be given a glass of good wine to start off his dining experience! On his plate will be a mushy card (because he actually likes mushy cards) and his Valentine's Day gift, all wrapped up.
Best of all, he has NO idea I'm planning any of this!

  33. My husband is trying to lose weight, so chocolate is out... dinner is out... and he says the day is for women anyway... so I called a place called "Edible Arrangements" (they are nationwide I believe) and they will deliver a fruit bouquet (they are on the net too I think) so there is no clutter left over in the house or on his waist. The fruit is arranged like a bouquet and some pieces are cut into heart and flower shapes and it is very fresh.

  34. ever since we've been dating, i've always cooked him a heart-shaped chocolate chip cookie for valentines' day.

  35. We don’t usually do too much on Valentine’s day. We don’t go out to eat because all the restaurants are full. We do celebrate it later in the month. Our church puts together a Couples’ Retreat every year the end of Feb. We go to the Pigeon Forge area in Tenn. This year we are going over a day early, like we did last year. We found a hotel with an in room Jacuzzi. That in itself was romantic. This time, I’ll have a Martina McBride love songs CD, some sparkling grape juice and lots of lotion. It’s nice to relax together before meeting the others at the retreat.

  36. The last few years my husband has taken me out to eat for Valentine's Day. Every year it's the same - restaurants are crowded, its hard to find parking, and even if we have a reservation we still have to wait and the wait staff are so busy that we don't get good service. We actually spend very little time together on this day. It takes time to get ready, driving time, drop the kids off, etc. So most of my evening is spent doing other things.
This year will be different, I'm going to take charge!
Thanks to flylady, my home is clean, and sometimes it even feels like a hotel or bed and breakfast. We want to spend time at home. So here's my plan:
I'm going to have a picnic in our living room. Right in the middle of the floor. I have a basket, that will be packed with several of my husband's favorite foods, sparkling grape juice, and our best champagne glasses. The kids will be in bed by 8, and we will have the whole evening to ourselves. We can relax, be comfortable, and enjoy each others company. I can't wait!

  37. Hi FlyLady! Thanks for everything you've done to help us out! Being a FlyBaby has helped me in ways you can't imagine!
My boyfriend currently lives in Germany. The separation is hard, so I try to give very thoughtful gifts that are also inexpensive to mail! This year for Valentine's Day, I'm making a small book for him containing poetry (mainly haiku!) that I had written during times were together - vacation, out on the town, etc. They are funny little poems, and often were written just to get a laugh. I'm handwriting the poems onto nice paper, and then will use a hole-punch and a strip of leather to hold the whole thing together. It's thoughtful, made from my heart, and inexpensive to do! And it will remind him of fun times we've had together. I'll leave some blank pages at the back for adventures yet to come!
I will also be giving him a photo of us together, when I went to visit him in Germany, in a classy frame to match his decor.
One nice gift that I gave him for Christmas, that he really appreciated, was a pair of boots he had asked me to give to charity when he moved to Germany. He seemed sad to see those boots go, so instead of donating them (sorry people who needed boots!), I took them into a repair shop to get the heel fixed, get them resoled, and have the leather reconditioned. They didn't look like the same pair of boots when they were done! The bill was under $40 and they brought him such joy! He was very appreciative that I had held on to those boots for months, waiting to surprise him!

    Thanks again for everything!
    Flying in Savannah

  38. I am making my guy his favorite cake in a heart shaped cake pan and I am making him Dinner on Friday evening. He has bought us tickets to go to a Botanical Garden on Saturday. He has to be out of town on Valentines Day so were celebrating early!

  39. My sweet DH came up with the most romantic clutter-free gift last year for Valentine's Day. He suggested that we each write the top 10 reasons why we love the other person. He ended up giving me a list of 50 reasons! They were big and small, from remembering to pack him socks in his gym bag to encouraging him to go back to school. That list is something I will cherish forever and always brings my spirits up.

  40. Weekend at B&B, Dinner OUT, Dinner IN for 2 with _NO TV. Light candles, Bring home chocolate mousse. HIGH Tea. Hot chocolate, favorite bottle of wine, a PERFECT HUGE ROSE.
Date for TWO to a movie. Kids to Grandmas and Grandpas. THEY will understand.

  41. Fly Crew,
How does Surf and Tuf by candlelight sound. We are married 42 years but we'll always enjoy being Valentines. Happy Hearts day to you too!!!

  42. The first Valentine's Day of our marriage, I got a lot of cute but cheap gifts and hid them around the house, with clues. Like, a bowl of Hershey's kisses next to the Scrabble board with I LOVE YOU spelled on it, and a clue leading to the bedroom where he found his new slippers and another clue, etc. The last clue led to ME, hiding behind the back door, wearing some especially filmy honeymoon lingerie and the symbols for the card Queen of Hearts painted on my body in lipstick. (We lived in San Francisco then and it doesn't get real cold there.) I also had a bottle of champagne in one hand and our bride and groom wine glasses from the reception in the other.
Obviously, we could never have done this AFTER we had kids or even pets. But it made a great newlywed memory. Even through the closed back door I could hear him laughing with anticipation as he hunted me through the kitchen...
P.S. NO, we won't do this again in a hurry! See kids, pets, above! We are too broke these days to even buy each other the Claw or the 100pack of CD's, much less several small gifts of toys and sweets. At least we have each other! Maybe we'll manage dinner and a movie and a nice bouquet...

  43. Bubblebath and massage--he's been under an amazing amount of stress lately. We have a new baby who is a big high needs, as well as two other children. We moved into a new home with a wonderful master bath- extra long claw foot tub with a rim mount faucet so it's large enough for both of us to soak up to our chins. We've been so busy we haven't had time to use it yet. I'm going to fill it and serve him a glass of wine and a clean soft bath towel after the kids are in bed for the night.

  44. My honey is going to receive his favorite cookies (thumbprints shaped like hearts with strawberry jam) and a plush heart pillow that has a pocket for his valentine's cards.

  45. Dear Flycrew,
It's been a long time since I've been excited about Valentine's Day, but this year I can hardly contain my enthusiasm! I have a new guy in my life who helps me FLY - just love myself the way that I am right now even though he is aware of my silly flaws. I wanted to do something really special for our first Valentine's Day.
A big group of people is taking a trip the weekend after Valentine's Day and I have told my boyfriend that I can't get off work, so he's planning to stay with his friends. But really I've got his friends in on the surprise. I did get off work and I paid for our own hotel room as his valentine's gift. I cannot wait to surprise him and to spend a long weekend with him!
Thanks to FLYing my budget is under control so I can afford this trip, I'll have clean clothes to pack, and I'll leave a clean house to come home to. Thank you so much for all that you do and for giving me a chance to share this story!

    Lots of love,

  46. Hi FlyLady!
We are pretty short on money right now, so we're just going to go out to dinner for Valentine's this year - which is actually a great present because we have a 1-year-old so we don't get out much!
However, I am doing something for my husband for Valentine's. I am doing something nice for him every day this month. That's the new habit I have picked for myself for the month. For example, last night I gave him a back rub and tonight we're going to play Play Station. This is a great way to make sure that I am showing my love and appreciation. I, unfortunately, tend to take him for granted. I don't always show him that I think I have the best husband in the world. So, this month-long challenge will hopefully become a habit!

    Happy Valentine's Day!
    D in Kansas City

  47. This is my first wedded Valentine's Day with my DH. We are celebrating Valentine's Day the weekend after; I am taking my husband to a local resort where I have rented a whirlpool suite for us for the night! I plan on spending Friday the 18th pampering MYSELF at the on-site spa (including a new hairdo and makeover). Once I'm all nice and fancy, we will have a romantic dinner at the local ritzy restaurant (I made my reservations weeks ago!). After dinner, we will go back to our room where I will have sparkling cider (he doesn't like champagne) and strawberries for us to enjoy in the whirlpool together.

  48. Hi, My daughter is going to take her hubby to a "teddy bear" factory or some such in Tampa, at the International Mall (I think it's called that) where you choose the teddy bear "shell", put in the "heart", and the stuffing, and then dress it in your choice of teddy bear outfits. The "Heart" carries the love and good wishes to the recipient.

  49. This is actually something I did for my husband last year. He was very touched. I used card stock and cut up small pieces about an 1/4 inch wide and an inch long. On one side I wrote one reason I loved him...i.e. "You make me laugh." Then I folded the piece of paper in half. I decorated the outside with hearts, XXXOOO or smiley faces (whatever you can think of). I closed each one with a small heart sticker. I put all of these (there were about 35 separate notes) in a jar that I decorated with ribbons. When I gave it to him I said, "This is why you will always be my one and only Valentine." I sat there and watched him read the notes, he laughed, got choked up and said it was the most thoughtful gift he had ever recieved.
The best reason I came up with is, "You could finish my sentences....but you don't." I am a lucky woman!

  50. Dear FLYLady and FLYCrew,
Unable to get a committed answer from my husband as to what he wants (he had a few suggestions that I probably shouldn't mention, but mostly he just shrugged and scowled and said, "You know I'm not picky; why are you asking me this?") However, I know what I AM doing for him.
We're currently in a VERY tight spot for money. We have three kids, and he recently started a new job. To top it all off, I'm now a full-time college student at Kansas State University. So we're kept busy, busy, busy, and a lot of money goes into just making ends meet.
At KSU, a lot of extra-curricular activities and other announcements are made by students, side-walk-chalking huge messages on the many walkways on campus. I usually give these a passing glance, and hurry off to one class or another. One caught my eye the other day, and I just had to stop and look. And look. And look. "Serenade your sweetheart with a string quartet, roses, and a card! Just $25." It was perfect. My husband loves classical music, and I like to surprise him throughout the year with flowers. It's unconventional, and he likes that; he's not the kind of guy who grouses over getting a bouquet, provided it's not too frilly. Red roses are his favorite; simple and understated, just a bud or two. So when I saw this, I went crazy! It just looked too good to be true. So that's what I'm doing. Then, I'm going to take him out to dinner, and afterwards, bring him home and give him a massage, and read to him before we go to bed.
My advice to anyone who thinks this is a great idea: If you live near a college that has a music department, check them out and see if they're offering a similar deal. It's a lot less expensive than hiring a professional quartet, and as they're training to become professional musicians, they're usually very good, already.
We all work hard, and our men do, too. So I'm ready to turn the tables this year and do something sweet for HIM.

    Sincerely,
    A FLYBaby in Kansas

  51. For Valentine's Day, I'm whisking my husband away for a weekend at a cabin 1 1/2 hours away. I fit it into our budget by choosing somewhere with discounted winter rates and a kitchen so we can bring our own food (for instance, Saving Dinner stuff!). We can sit in front of the fireplace and play games, hike and explore the surrounding area, and try out the 2-person Jacuzzi tub. He needs the break and so do I!
Something I did for him in the past was to make a poster entitled "100 Things I Appreciate About You." All I needed was a big piece of posterboard and some colorful markers. I wrote down big things ("you planned a romantic marriage proposal"), little things ("you give great foot rubs"), and character qualities ("you are a faithful and loyal friend"). He was so touched and had it framed to hang in our bedroom!

  52. Dear Flycrew,
What I'm planning to do with DH is a mid afternoon horse back ride. I plan to take him down to the river and then up to the IRONWOOD park edge and back to the barn about sunset. I then plan to follow it with Leannes menu and candle light. I've got the oatmeal milk bubble bath mix ready and the horses treats to keep them happy too. :) AZ Flybaby Gloria Thanks crew for all you do.
