Dear FlyLady,

I have three children, ages 9, 11, and 13. We live in the very dry climate of AZ, and since they’ve been babies, I’ve stressed the importance of drinking plenty of water. When they were little, it was easy to keep track of sippy cups, washing and refilling them, and knowing which colored lid belonged to which child. However, as they grew, and activities away from mom/dad increased, the grab and go water bottle became the norm. I became frustrated with the amount of half-consumed plastic bottles I would find in backpacks, nightstands, in the back of the car, around the garage from bike rides. No one claimed them, so they got tossed on plants, in the dog bowl, or down the drain if they looked suspicious (it does get very hot here and even water grows experiments!)
For Valentine’s Day I decided to get FlyLady water bottles for my children. Oh my goodness, you would have thought I bought them a fully loaded MP3 player of some sort! They filled them up right away, and were so impressed that there was still ice inside the next morning!!
My teenager made a great observation. She said when she’s at school, friends will ask if they can have a sip of her water. She doesn’t want to be mean, but said she really doesn’t like to share from the same bottle, especially during cold/flu season, but people could always see she had enough to “share”. She likes the stainless steel bottle for two bonus reasons. One: You can’t see how much water is inside. Two: If someone hears water sloshing inside, giving away that there is enough water to share, she liked that the outside didn’t feel cool to the touch so she could tell them hers was warm! A creative way “out” of germ sharing.
I, as the mom of three, love that the colored/corded handle helps me identify immediately whose water bottle was “left on the table”. 🙂
Thanks for taking the time to find a worthy product. I also got myself one, too. I love ice cold water, and the taste stays pure, not taking on any plastic taste! My husband is still the grab and go guy, but after seeing all of us enjoy our wonderful water bottles, perhaps by Father’s Day….?
