My Streaky Floors Were Saved

Dear FlyLady,

As I am cleaning and preparing to sell our house, I was mopping my hardwood floors (these are the snap together pre-fab stuff you get from big box home stores).

I try to use no chemicals when cleaning, and was given a homemade “recipe” that supposedly had great results on floors. Ok, why not! I knew the ingredients are great for other things. I mixed it up, mopped the floors, and then we left for a local parade while the floors dried.

We came back two hrs later to see an awful white film all over my floors! YIKES! Did I just ruin our floors?!? I found a bit of Murphy’s oil soap in my cupboard, and washed the floors again with bucket of that mix. And then a second time…..now I’ve mopped my floors three times, still a white film, although slightly less. Not only did it have a film, but it had circles all over, like liquid drops.

I did a google search and found a solution for residue that called for non-ammonia window cleaner, let sit a minute, wash with a sponge, then wipe with a damp rag. I grabbed my purple rags, since I didn’t have any sponges. I did a test spot, and thankfully it worked. So I decided to try wiping with just a wet purple rag and then wipe with a dry one. HALLELUJAH it worked!!

No need for the window cleaner…..just two purple rags. I felt like the Karate Kid….wipe on, wipe off! I spent the next hour on hands and knees wiping all of the floors down. My floors were saved!!!!

Thank you!

FlyLady here: I am very happy that the purple rags saved “Cinderella’s” Floor!

purpleragsHalfsaleAlways check with the manufacturer before you put any kind of cleaner on any kind of flooring, especially hardwood.

One of the best things you can do for hardwood floors is to dust mop them daily. I do this with the FlyLady Dust Mop. Have you ever watched my video of me dust mopping the floor to the William Tell Overture?

The FlyLady XL Mop is half price.
