Do You Have Tips for a Limited Budget?

Dear FlyLady,

In your emails you have told us to make our master bedrooms a sanctuary.  I was wondering if you have any tips for sprucing mine up on a very limited budget?

Dear FlyBaby A.

Being a good steward of your money is a great way to live! Even if we have the money, learning how to decorate on a shoestring is fun for all of us. This is why we watch HGTV, DYI Network, and browse Pinterest. We are searching for ideas for our homes.

When you watch any of these shows they usually start with an empty room. This means that the room has been totally decluttered. I have already written an essay on the Cheapest Remodel of All!

Let’s discuss some ways that you can change the feel of the room without having to spend money! This week we are in our bedrooms. If you have a desk or a treadmill in your room find a new place for them and move a comfy chair in there and a little table.

Then change your sheets to something spring/summer feeling.

  1.  Dig through your linen closet and find some sheets you have not used in years.
  2. Wash and iron them. Then put on your bed without a bedspread. Immediately the room feels lighter.
  3. Raid your mothers linen closet. She may have some antique sheets you can use.

Add new pillows shams and covers to your decorative throw pillows.

  1. You can use old shirts to tie around an older pillow.
  2. Tie a scarf around a pillow.
  3. Put some while pillow cases on regular pillows to spruce up your bed.

Put a new color on the walls! Go to your local paint store and ask to look at their wrong color gallons. You may be able to find a color you like for a few dollars.  If you need more than 1 gallon it might cost a little more money.

Change your headboard just by putting your bed on a stand-alone frame and hanging an old door on the wall. Here is a Pinterest board. You may want to repaint your furniture to lighten up your room.

It is time to think about your window treatments. It might be fun to take down any heavy draperies and leave up the shear. Although they may need to be washed.

Then think about the floor! A different rug beside the bed could be fun. Now let’s accessorize your bedroom from the rest of the house. Go look under your kitchen sink and find a vase to put on your dresser. Go outside and cut a simple branch to put in the vase.

Place a light blanket or a flannel sheet across the foot of your bed. Toss a scarf over a lamp shade or move another lamp from some other place in your home. And there you have it; a simple bedroom make-over from your linen closet, under your sink, and your closet!

Be sure and take some before and after pictures. I can’t wait to see them. Send them to me, FlyLady@flylady.net with MY NEW BEDROOM in the subject line!
