Teaching With The Timer

Dear Flylady,

I have been trying for months to get my 11 yo daughter to work on cleaning up her room 5 minutes at a time.

Long story short, there was really no noticeable improvement.

So yesterday, I decided to try a different approach.

I brought in one of our Flylady timers, I sat down with her on the floor, and I said, “Chloe, I am going to help you. We are going to set the timer for 5 minutes, and then we will take a break.”

She was not exactly thrilled.  We started in one corner, and I handed her one thing at a time, starting with the big things.

“Do you love this or does it need to go in the giveaway box or be thrown away?”

When the timer went off we stopped, fist-bumped in celebration, and I said, “ I’ll come back in a bit and we will do another 5 minutes.”

After the second 5 minutes, we had made noticeable improvement, and Chloe’s attitude was also improving.

In fact, when I went by during our break time, she was almost smiling as she was clearing off her dresser top. All by herself!!!

Her room is so peaceful now.  We both just love it.

Next I will start working with her to teach her how to put things away when she is finished with them.

I. Am. So. Proud. Of. Us!!!

Thank you, Flylady, for teaching me how to love myself and my children with routines to babystep our way to the peaceful, clean home we deserve!!

Much love,
Michelle in Missouri
