Dear FlyLady,
Like some others, I also had to learn the hard way to wear my lace-up shoes. I’m a work-at-home mom, which means in part that I don’t really have to get dressed to go to work.
One morning, I drove my kids to school while wearing slippers — because no one’s going to see them, right? Once we got to school, my son realized he forgot something important. I told him he was pretty much out of luck since I had to get back to work at home. When I pulled back into our street, I was excited to see a student from the same school getting ready to drive to school. I hopped out of the car and ran across the street to see if she could take the item to my son. She said yes, so I started to sprint back across the street to quickly get the forgotten item to give to her.
Well, I was wearing slippers… Somehow my foot came out of the heel of one and I stepped on it with my other foot, got all tripped up and fell HARD on my knee and wrist! Right in the middle of the street, I sat helpless for a minute in so much pain I couldn’t get up, hoping a car didn’t come! I ended up having to go to the emergency care center… My husband had to come home from work to take me since I couldn’t really drive with an unusable leg and wrist. And of course, I had to inform my boss of what had happened and I also had to stop work for the day.
After hours of tests that day, and an MRI on another day (because I was too swollen that day), I had deeply bruised tissue in my shin/knee area, which took weeks to heal. And my wrist took almost a year to get back to normal, after multiple visits to an orthopedic surgeon. It was a high price to pay for whatever minute or two I might have saved that morning by putting on slippers instead of shoes.
