I have an answer to those SAHMs who ask “why should I wear shoes around the house?”
The answer? SAFETY!
I live in a house with wooden steps down to the basement. I’m up and down the steps several times a day for various things, and until I started Flying I wore floppy sandals in the summer or slippers in the winter. Last summer I caught one of my sandals on the step coming back up and banged up my knees badly. You’d think I would have learned my lesson. The second week of February I was going down one morning IN MY SLIPPERS to pull some items out of the fridge for dinner that night. My slippers lived up to their name, and I got a fast ride to the bottom! I was bumped and scraped along my whole back, and I am pretty sure I had a concussion.
A klutz like me can probably manage a fall like that anywhere, BUT it wouldn’t have happened that morning if I’d been wearing my lace-up shoes. But if you’re at home, does it matter if you have to nurse a sore head, bottom, knees…pride…? Well I’ve got teenagers and I can tell you I ruined some plans that week. My youngest (16) was the one who helped me back up the steps and hovered till his dad got home from work that day. He didn’t need that stress and neither did I. If my boys had been little yet, I don’t know what I would have done. I was certainly in no shape to do much moving around.Ladies, put some good sturdy shoes on. For the sake of your ankles and knees…and for the love of your little ones. There’s only one of you.
