Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I have been fluttering for about two months now, and I could tell you all the ways that it has helped my home and my life (for example, how my friend came over and marveled at the fact that my kitchen was cleaner than she’d ever seen it), but I really want to thank you for how you’ve helped me in my writing! Yup, that’s right, your system and your Flywashing have helped me in my vocation.
I’m a SAHM and a writer. I write book reviews, magazine articles, blog posts for my church, and I’m working on a novel. But I always find it really hard to find writing time as a SAHM (and SHE). When I get afternoons off and go to a cafe, or when both my kids are napping and I have some peace and quiet, I’m intimidated by all the projects I have to catch up on, and of course, I’m paralyzed by my perfectionism.
Your emails have been slowly changing my thinking, however. I’ve started to think to myself, “A book review written poorly still blesses me and my readers!” Plus, I can always go back and edit later. I can’t edit content that isn’t even there.
I started a new goal for myself. Instead of going to a cafe and trying to catch up on all my work for 3-4 hours (which never ends up being nearly as productive as I hope, because of my perfectionism and how overwhelmed I am), now I set a goal of 15 minutes a day. That’s it. I force myself to write for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, if I have writer’s block or things to do or if I want to work on another project, I give myself permission to do so. But so far, I haven’t wanted to stop when the timer goes off! I’ve kept working and I’ve been so productive each time. My book reviews are getting written much faster, and they aren’t hanging over my head.
It’s amazing what we can do in 15 minutes, and when we stop demanding perfection of ourselves, right?
