November Habit #11 My Favorite Habit

Dear FlyLady,

I joined FlyLady about three years ago and my favourite habit of the month has been menu planning. I started this habit last November and it stuck.

This year,  DD18 started college and she drives into work with me (oh man! She is a total SHE like me and so you can imagine how brutal it is to get both of us ready to go on time) since her college is in the same city as my job. Because my workplace is forty minutes from home, I have to have a menu plan in place.

I do a month’s worth of meals on my FlyLady calendar in pencil and that way if anything changes it is easily corrected. It sounds like a lot, but I already my family’s schedule rarely changes so at least 3 out of 7 days are not going to change.

For example, once a week my DD18 is in class until 6 PM. Since I stay in town and wait for her to finish, that is the day I use the slow cooker to make dinner for DH and DD16. By the time DD18 and I get home, my husband and younger daughter have eaten and all I have to do is put the leftovers away for DH’s lunch the next day.

Everyone also knows that grocery day is the day we have take out and Mom takes a break from cooking.

Some of my routines puzzle my family (like my insistence about shining the sink), some exasperate them (like making the bed – DH likes to toss the sheets up and I insist on straightening them) and some only a couple of them are on board with (my SHE DD18 is learning the importance of a day planner in keeping her projects’ due dates straight) but everyone agrees that having our menus planned ahead is the best idea FlyLady ever had!
