December Habit #20 Do it For Myself

Dear FlyLady,

I just read the testimony that was labeled “pamper myself with gifts”. The person was describing a way of being involved with grandkids by using the internet to enjoy opening gifts.  It was an excellent way to deal with families that are close but far away.

I would like to offer another option for people like me who have families who are far away physically, but even father away spiritually. I think that after this election in the US, there may be even more families in that situation.  For many years, I would send presents to each member of my sister’s family (and I know that my parents did the same). The presents were always searched for and meant to be special for the person. But, in return, we would get one item that you would go “what the heck” or sadly, not even a card.  Oh,  we would not get a thank you call or note.  But, we kept giving because we loved them.

So,  I‘m “downsizing” my gifts to “my family” and gift more to my community and myself.

For my family, they’ll get gifts of local food (pecans are the best..). The grandnephews will get a gift and a check for their school fund.

For my community, I like to go to the stores and buy up the small dollar size items of candy, books, lotions, and other things.  I donate these items to the local senior meals on wheels.  The seniors get  small gifts  during the year.  It’s a plus and since I am getting older, maybe I’ll just start volunteering and deliver food and smiles to our seniors.  Who knows, I may need their help in the future!

For myself, I’ll think of twelve things I want to do or get for myself.  I haven’t decided if I want to just do this for the twelve days of Christmas or spread it out over the year. I remember making “good for one..” coupon booklets for my parents as a kid.  So, I just need to do it for myself.

Sometimes, we rely on others to give us gifts.  But, we need to realize that we need to give ourselves permission to pamper our bodies and our souls.
