Playing Havoc with Your Body and Budget

Dear Friends,

Grocery shopping is something that has to be done. Most us wait till the weekend because that is when we get paid but that is when it is the busiest. Stress levels go up and all we want to do is get out of there fast. People are rushing. You better get out of their way if you are taking your time. Don’t even think about going to the grocery store after you get off work. Yesterday I was searching for some information about one of our local grocery stores. They announced that the store is closing. I noticed that Google has an interesting feature. It has a graph of each day to show the busiest hours. That is a good feature. If you notice the red bar; the store is busier than usual today because I guess everything is on sale because they are closing the store.

Let me tell you a little secret about shopping. The less you go to the grocery store and the discount store, the more money you are going to save. I know this is hard to wrap your head around but think of it this way. If you run into the grocery store to pick up one item, you will end up spending $50.00. If you only go to the supermarket every other week, you are not as likely to overspend on impulse buys.

As a young mother, we only got a pay check once a month. I had to plan meals around when we got paid. That is why I made a five week meal plan. Don’t get caught up in your perfectionism. This is so easy to do because we are such perfectionist. I just tried to draw lines on a piece of paper and gave up. I didn’t like making a grid on my computer because the boxes were so small. When I think about our calendar with huge boxes, it works well for menu planning.

It works for keeping a menu diary. This could be the beginning of your menu planning. Try to remember what your family ate last week; write it on your calendar. Write the entrees down on little post it notes. Place on your calendar for two weeks from now.

My stocked pantry keeps me from running to the grocery store for only one item. I have powdered buttermilk and evaporated milk for recipes that call for these items. We keep frozen backup vegetables in the freezer too. There are a few canned items we keep on hand; pork and beans for my famous baked beans, cans of kidney beans for chili, and black beans.

In our book Body Clutter, we discussed shopping for food in the grocery stores by browsing the walls of the store. The fresh produce is on the first wall, back wall is fresh meat, and last wall is the dairy section. I also like the frozen vegetable aisle. I don’t buy pre-made entrees in the frozen food section. They play havoc with my body and my budget.

Start making your menu plan for next week. Keep it simple! Use up what you have in your freezer, pantry, and refrigerator. Save real money!
