Dear FlyLady,
Although I have been a flybaby for 11 years, I didn’t declutter regularly. I still had a lot of clutter in every room. So, last summer I started decluttering every day. (Previously, I just stored things in boxes and plastics tubs.)
I started in the kitchen. I was so proud of myself when I saw empty counters every day by the time August rolled around. However, in August a water pipe broke in the kitchen. Not only was the kitchen soaked but other rooms as well. These rooms hasn’t been decluttered in years. I had many items that I stored on the floor ruined. Boxes stored on the floor got wet and mold grew under them.
These items that I was saving on the floor in boxes and tubs had to be tossed. If I would have donated them, someone could have used them.
In addition, I had many strangers (insurance people, engineers, plumbers, restoration people, etc.) in every room of my house. They looked at all of my contents and calculated how much it would cost to move it. I was so embarrassed!
My time of dealing with my clutter has come. I have to get rid of so much and quickly. I don’t have the luxury of time. I wish I would have started really decluttering years ago.
Please do as Flylady says. The clutter has to leave your house whether it’s in the trash or donated. Take a lesson from me. Imagine what you would do with everything on your floor if you had a flood. Imagine that you had a disaster or emergency and strangers had to enter every room of your house. Keep working on it!
Sincerely,
Lisa
