A System to Follow

Dearest FlyLady,

I have always been a pretty organized person. So when 10 years ago I came across your first book, I wasn’t in a situation of the CHAOS. I had worked full-time up until that point and was newly married without kids at home. My DH and I would split the household chores. When I had my first son, I began staying at home.

How quickly your priorities change from cleaning and taking care of the house to just focusing on your baby, which is what I did for a year. My little one was colicky so I wasn’t worrying about anything but sleeping, eating and bathing (sometimes).  I don’t regret any of that for a second,  but do you know in that year how quickly the clutter piled?  Since we had cut our income in half, I became a little obsessed with ways to save money and was reluctant to get rid of things as a result. “We will use that fondue pot or I will be three sizes smaller again one day.” Then the cleaning, it became a procrastination game. “Oh, I’m not working now I have plenty of time to clean.” The next thing you know my DH would be home caring for the baby on the weekend, while I would clean a few weeks work of guck in the house and try to catch up laundry. He would help, but there was just too much to do! It was exhausting.

Your book and your routines, put order back in my life. It also let me know not to obsess too much about anything really. That cleaning some was better than nothing. It did not have to be perfect. I didn’t have to do it all at once. Baby steps, 15 minutes at a time. Before you know it, in a few months time, the clutter made its way out. I was more intentional about what I kept knowing that I would have to store it and so it must have a good use to stay in my house. My rooms in my home got the attention they needed once a month because of the zones. I did a load of dishes and laundry every single day to keep Mount Washmore away. I swished and swiped most days. I didn’t have to have the perfect cleaner or the perfect tool and soap is soap.

As time went on I’ve just gotten better at Flying. Five years ago I had a second son and began a business as a virtual assistant at home part time. Your routines were all the more important, because I had a system to follow, I could squeeze in the time to do my work hours and still made sure my house was an order. I am so grateful for your book Sink Reflections, your Facebook videos where we get to visit with you and see your smiling face and your emails that keep me on track. Thank FlyLady!
